It is injection of medication or steroid into your joint. A joint is any place where 2 bones move against each other and are enclosed in a joint capsule.
How long does a joint injection take?
The injection only takes a few minutes
What is actually being injected?
The injection is generally a low dose steroid medication and a local anesthetic.
Will the injection hurt?
During the injection, a needle is inserted into your skin and into deeper tissues which can cause so minor discomfort. However, we sometimes numb your skin and deep tissue with a local anesthetic which makes this procedure comfortable for majority of our patients.
What to expect after injection?
Immediately following the injection, you may feel that the pain has eased or completely disappeared. This is due to the injected anesthetic and can be expected to last for a few hours. The pain may return and the joint may be sore for the next day or so, but you can expect to start noticing pain relief on the 3rd to 5th day.
How long does it usually last?
The anesthetic typically wears off within a few hours. The steroid on the other hand begins to work in 3 to 5 days, but can last for several weeks to a few months.
